I was born in the ‘90s, Texas to be exact and my family always was traveling from U.S.A to Mexico and back so i guess since i was little i got access to many places and technology.
I got my first camera when i was around 10 years old, it was a gift from my parents, they always support me even now with all my steps and for that im very grateful. My first camera was a Vivitar, a CV35 transparent blue color to be exact! and i believe i still have it around and even some pictures im pretty sure are in my family albums.
It was a 35mm point and shoot camera with a 27mm lens wide angle lens, i remember taking it everywhere with me and i loved that sound of the flash charging before every photo, for some time i lost it and found it again around 3 years later and i was so happy to see that it was working. Sadly i was a kid and i didnt have enough money to buy more films but my parents time to time bought me some.
Around that time as well my mother loved to record everything and she still does! but now she changed to a cellphone, i guess when people get old cameras become heavy and to be honest, thats one of my worst fears, not being able to carry my camera anymore, by the way i have a story about an old lady i met in japan but ill save that for later!.
My mother that time had a sony camcorder it was a Sony 8mm, something about using a 8mm video cassette felt just so good to me, i remember she had this massive archive of 8mm in her closet and i loved, LOVED to watch the videos again and again, it was mostly my family vacations, im grateful that i was able to watch them so many times and that those memories live inside me even now i can easily remember so many places and people from the videos even it happened years ago and the best thing is that i see them in my mind trough my mother eyes which make it even more beautiful.
Sadly my house got robbed and they even stole my mother video cassette and the Sony 8mm, i dont know why they stole used cassettes but that was the year i got very sad since i wasnt able to watch them anymore, and after that my mother got a handycam! which we still have and i even used in Korea for some of my videos with my friends, crazy to see that even after so many years it does still works.
When i was around 13 years old i kept my taste for photography but also for video, watching a lot of movies and even started a youtube channel, which is funny because until this day i love making videos for youtube as vlogs with my friends and daily life.
By that age i got some cameras on my hands and i was using more my mother handycam, it was me the one who was recording now my family vacations and i loved that.
My father always loved to drive so instead of taking a plane we always hit the road and that was also so lovely because if by plane takes 1 hour to arrive by car takes days, since we used to sleep in random cities in Mexico and in the morning continue with the trip, im so happy that it was like that because i was able to see more things that way.
Then around the age of 17 i decided to study psychology, it was something that did feel so good to me and i enjoyed my first year at university studying that but i realized i was not happy and talking with my teachers i realized that even i was studying psychology i was doing art as taking pictures of my friends, videos and even self learning that time after effects.
One day, one of my teachers told me that i should try what makes me happy and that i didnt need to study psychology to help people, people can be cured by art but more in a spiritual and mind way than a physical way. Thats when i realized that, i wanted to be creating and i wanted to be surrounded by colors.
Next year i changed by major to film and photography and by age of 18 i got my first DSLR camera the canon t4i or EOS 650D, funny that i got that camera and it worked all these years until 2 years ago when i sold it to get a new film camera, incredible that i got my canon for so long, it definitely got a place on my heart and will always do, thanks Matilda for all the cool photos you did!.
